About ToolsByRole
ToolsByRole exists because every "best AI tools" list on the internet is a catalog of 100+ tools built for nobody in particular. We do the opposite: a curated AI stack organized by what you do for a living.
How we rank
Every page is a comparison of AI tools for one specific profession doing one specific job. Marketers writing blog posts get different recommendations than writers writing novels, even though some of the tools overlap. We rank what we'd actually pick if we were doing that work for a living, not what would pay us the most.
Every ranking comes down to three things:
- Actual fit for the profession. A tool that's great for marketers might be wrong for lawyers, and the page should say so.
- Real pricing. We list current 2026 prices, including the differences between monthly and annual billing, and the gotchas in credit-based pricing.
- Real tradeoffs. Every tool gets pros and cons. If the cheaper tool is actually fine for your use case, we say that.
How we make money
We earn a commission when readers sign up for tools through our affiliate links. That payment is the same whether we rank a tool first or last, so it doesn't change the ranking. See our full affiliate disclosure for the specific programs we participate in.
Tools that don't have affiliate programs are still ranked when they belong on the list. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Ahrefs, and others appear regularly as top picks. We don't earn anything from those recommendations, and we still make them.
How we keep this current
AI tooling changes fast. Every page shows a "Last updated" date so you know when we last reviewed it. A monthly automated check flags price changes, feature additions, and discontinued products, and we update the rankings accordingly.

Who runs this
ToolsByRole is run by Chris Mendenhall. Independent operator, not a media conglomerate, not a venture-backed startup, not an analyst at a research firm. Every ranking on the site is his, every product page is one he'd actually pick if he were doing that work for a living, and every commission relationship is documented on the affiliate disclosure page.
